Internationally-renowned Filipino artist, Rodel Tapaya, explains his vision and process on creating the fantastical realism of his exhibit, Urban Labyrinth. ABOUT RODEL TAPAYA: Now a multi-awarded international artist, Tapaya is considered as one of the leading Filipino visual artists of his generation. Tapaya started to gain widespread recognition by earning the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize and Nokia Arts Awards Asia in 2011. Tapaya’s works have been showcased in galleries across Singapore, Italy, Germany, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and China. ABOUT URBAN LABYRINTH: Urban Labyrinth featured 18 new works consisting of large scale paintings, works under glass and on paper, and video work. The pieces are packed with fantastical characters and hypnotic imagery, depicting the complexity of life in informal urban settlements in the Philippines. It was on show from February 23 – April 15, 2018.
